Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have a certain level of skill to join?

Anyone is welcome to join regardless of skill level and playing experience. Repertoire will be selected for the approximate average of the group, but you are welcome to play any or all pieces on which you feel comfortable. This is a supportive environment, and the value is in your presence, not your skill.

What is the time requirement to participate?

The Utah Medical Orchestra rehearses weekly for approximately 2 hours on Tuesday evenings. However, we understand that our musicians have uniquely demanding schedules, and we don't expect or require perfect attendance to participate. You are welcome to attend any rehearsals you can, and are welcome to perform in our concert as long as you meet the attendance minimum for that concert (typically 2 out of the 3 rehearsals directly prior to the concert.) Additional opportunities will be available for participation in chamber ensembles, which are optional and would require additional rehearsal time.

Who is eligible to join?

Health professions trainees, healthcare professionals and staff, and graduate students and faculty in health sciences are eligible to participate. You do not need to be affiliated with the University of Utah to participate in the Utah Medical Orchestra. If you are unsure about participating, please contact us for more info!

What if I play a non-orchestral instrument?

If you are interested in being involved but play a non-orchestral instrument (eg. piano, voice, guitar), please fill out the interest form (in the Get Involved tab) and we will let you know if opportunities arise for you to participate in the large ensemble, or in chamber groups. Please note, chamber ensembles require rehearsal attendance and have rehearsals scheduled outside of the Tuesday evening time window.
